Ridge tiles run along the top of the roof and down the hips. They sit in mortar, and after years of weather that mortar cracks and falls out. Then the tiles come loose, and a storm can lift them.

The bedding is sound, so the cracked mortar is raked out and the joints are pointed again.
The tiles are lifted, the old mortar comes off, and they go back down on fresh mortar.
The mortar is done away with and each tile is fixed down mechanically. See our dry ridge page.
It depends on what’s under the tiles. If you can rock a ridge tile by hand, pointing over the top won’t hold it. We’ll get up, check, and tell you which job the roof needs.
It's worth sorting before the next storm. A ridge tile that comes off can do damage on the way down, and it leaves the top of the roof open.
It has no mortar to crack, so there's nothing to repoint later. See our dry ridge page.
